Choosing a Siding Product
When you decide to install new siding on your project, you are faced with a decision to choose which product to install. Let us help out with a few points to make your decision to fit your lifestyle.
The first question to ask your self is ‘what are we looking for in the product or what is important to us.’ Here are a few points to consider:
Aesthetics: What type of look are you going for? Low maintenance products such as vinyl, steel & aluminum have certain limitations. For example, it is very difficult to achieve a radius look with these type of products, where as natural products (such as wood, or composite) have more capabilities in design of shapes.
Maintenance schedule: What are you willing to put into your house on a maintenance schedule? Are you willing to re-paint on a normal schedule? If you are not, it may be best to look toward a low maintenance product such as vinyl, aluminum or steel.
Going green or sustainability: Is it important to you to go the extra step for the environment? If so, look at how each product is made and what each product does to reduce waste or increase sustainability. For example, LP SmartSide has a very good initiative. First, they use all parts of the trees that are harvested (unlike natural products that need to be milled into shapes i.e. cedar siding). Secondly, they use rather young trees that allows them to replace what they harvest and return to the natural habitat in a relatively short time period. They also use the waste in their products to heat their facilities, which reduces the energy needed to keep the facility running.
Color choices: Are you looking for a specific color or combination of colors? While low maintenance products such as vinyl, aluminum or steel have made GREAT strides in developing new and interesting colors, they only way to achieve ANY color you want is to paint.
Price: Are you looking to stay within a certain budget to meet your lifestyle? To make a general statement, it is cheaper to go with a more cost efficient products such as vinyl, however changes in the industry have allowed that gap to be less. For example, pre-finished hardboard product lowers the ‘on the wall’ cost of siding.
